Take it Easy: The Importance of Self-Care in Pregnancy & Postpartum

Taught by Ellie Wheeler

While pregnancy and postpartum can be exciting, it can also be a stressful time as we plan for and think about this life changing event! We get support to take care of our physical self, but our emotional self care can be neglected. This virtual class helps make space for emotional self care by addressing the normal emotional changes that happen during pregnancy and after birth. The class will also provide strategies to manage stress and low mood. Participants will not be asked to share personal information (this is not a therapy group).

Topics covered will include:

  • What is self-care, why it matters, and how to do it!
  • Common emotional changes during pregnancy and after birth, and strategies for addressing these
  • Managing preexisting mental health issues during and after pregnancy
  • Tips for managing anxieties and fears around labor and early parenting
  • Medication concerns
  • ‘Baby blues’
  • Postpartum depression
  • Understanding risk factors
  • Proactive preventative measures
  • What to expect your mood to do during and after pregnancy
  • How to get help and support with postpartum depression
  • Where to get further help and support
  • How to support your partner during pregnancy and after birth

About the classes
Each class is very informal in nature. This class is not intended as psychological therapy, but will provide information on general issues, self help strategies and sign posting for where people can get psychological support if needed.
