Building Confidence and Reducing Falls in Older Adults

Ascension Seton Hays is hosting Stepping On! Stepping On is a program that empowers older adults to carry out healthy behaviors that reduce the risk of falls. Stepping On is offered once a week for seven weeks. Each class is two hours and includes topics such as: balance and strength exercises, home hazards and solutions, vision and falls, and community safety. Guest experts include: Physical Therapy, Pharmacy expert, Vision expert and Community Safety expert.

Who Stepping On will Benefit:

  • People who are 60 years or older and live independently 
  • People who have experienced a fall or are concerned about falling

Stepping On will NOT Benefit:

  • People who use a walker or wheelchair full time
  • People with dementia or cognitive impairment

If your class required payment, a refund will be given if a cancellation request is received 2 business days (48 hours) prior to the start of the class/program. A full refund will be given for any class cancelled by the site.

    Getting to know each other, overview of the program, Physical therapist introduces the balance and strength exercises.

    Session 2- March 11, 2020- The Exercises and Moving about Safely

    Review and practice exercises with the physical therapist, explore the barriers and benefits of exercise, moving about safely, learning not to panic after a fall.

    Session 3- March 18, 2020- Advancing Exercises and Home Hazards

    Review and practice exercises, identify hazards in and about the home and problem-solving solutions.

    Session 4- March 25, 2020- Vision and Falls, Community Safety, and Footwear

    Review and practice exercises, the vision expert discusses the influence of vision on the risk of falling, and the community safety expert talks about strategies to get around the local community and reduce the risk of falling. Learn about the features of a safe shoe and identify clothing hazards.

    Session 5- April 1, 2020- Medication Management, Bone Health, and Sleeping Better

    Identify the importance of Vitamin D, sunlight, and calcium to protect from fall injury. The pharmacist talks about medications that increase falls risk.

    Session 6- April 8, 2020- Getting Out and About

    Explore different weather conditions that could lead to a fall. Review exercises. With a physical therapist, practice safe mobility techniques learned during the program.

    Session 7- April 15, 2020-Review and Plan Ahead

    Review and practice exercises. Reflect on the scope of things learned. Review anything requested.
